Finally a Vote on War Funding This Week

On the House calendar for this week is a vote on a $33 billion supplemental bill to escalate the war in Afghanistan.� The Senate did not accept the House version (passed without a vote on July 1st).� The House will likely now vote on the Senate version or something close to it.� This will likely mean something quite unusual: a straightforward vote in which yes means yes more war, and no means no.

Whether we block the bill or not, we will now be able to identify clearly and unambiguously the war supporters and war opponents.� They will need to be punished and rewarded while they're home for August and at the polls in November.� If the majority of Democrats vote against the war funds, we will be able to point out that opposition from the President's own party.� And the closer we come to defeating the bill the more we will have to build on as the peace movement joins with the labor and civil rights movements this fall.

Our message is simple:

Vote no on funding this escalation of war, regardless of whether it's a procedural vote, and regardless of any good measures attached to it.

Pull U.S. Troops Out of Pakistan

The House is expected to debate and vote on Tuesday on a privileged resolution (HCR 301) introduced by Congressmen Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul to remove U.S. forces from Pakistan. The resolution directs the President, pursuant to section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution, to remove the United States Armed Forces from Pakistan.� On this one we want to ask for Yes votes.

JUNIOR YEARLY MEETING INVITES YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THEIR PYM SERVICE
PROJECT

Following in a long tradition of Quakers' concerns for those in prison, the
teens will do a service project with The Prison Library Project at PYM 2010.
This nonprofit organization fulfills inmates' requests for books. The most
frequently requested book is a dictionary. Bibles are also requested.

The youth will read letters from prisoners and mark the book requested,
write labels, package books, and box up books for the organization's used
bookstore which helps it raise money.

YOU can make a difference in a person's life! It will cost you little or no
money. Bring or send a new paperback dictionary, Bible, or used books to
PYM. If no one in your Meeting is attending PYM you can mail books to:

Elise Boulding, Peace Scholar, Dies at 89

Elise Boulding, a sociologist, pacifist feminist and scholar who wrote extensively about conflict resolution in both personal and global relations and who helped establish the academic field known as peace studies, died June 24 in Needham, Mass. She was 89.

The cause was liver failure, her daughter, Christine, said; her mother also had Alzheimer’s disease, she said.

Ms. Boulding (pronounced BOWL-ding) taught at the University of Colorado and at Dartmouth and was the author of numerous books that explored factors inherent in building a less martial world.

A Norwegian-born Quaker, she was nominated for the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize by the American Friends Service Committee, the service arm of the Quaker faith, which was a co-recipient of the Nobel in 1947.

She came late to academia and a life of letters, receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1969 only after rearing five children. Her experience as a mother and a homemaker, she often said, informed much of her work.

Ms. Boulding advocated for the greater inclusion of women at the highest levels of diplomacy. She argued that strong families and the early education of children in nonviolent problem-solving were significant assets in humanity’s defense against a trigger-happy future.

She delineated the importance of nongovernmental organizations — from the Girl Scouts to Unesco — in creating cross-cultural communities that mitigate the belligerent effects of national rivalries. She pleaded for the greater consideration of and respect for the cultures of third world and primitive societies. She promoted environmentalism as a precept that gave individuals a stake in the perpetuation of a peaceable planet. And she pointed out time and again that though the world’s attention was most often focused on humankind’s penchant for conflict and violence, an equivalent, perhaps even more powerful, penchant for peaceable behavior existed in human beings as well.

“A richer and more diversified peace culture than any of us can now easily imagine, an international global peace culture, is there to be built out of the languages and lifeways and knowledge and experience worlds of the ‘10,000 societies’ now spread across the 185 states of today’s world,” she wrote in “Cultures of Peace: The Hidden Side of History” (2000), a book considered to be the culmination of her life’s work.

Elise Marie Biorn-Hansen was born in Oslo on July 6, 1920. At age 3 she moved with her parents to northern New Jersey, where her father, Joseph, worked as an engineer for Carrier, the air-conditioning manufacturer, and her mother, Birgit, who had trained to be a nurse, was a massage therapist. She graduated from Douglass College (now part of Rutgers University). After moving to Syracuse, where her family had resettled, she met and married Kenneth Boulding, an economist and poet, in 1941.

The marriage lasted more than half a century, until Mr. Boulding’s death in 1993. In addition to her daughter, who lives in Wayland, Mass., she is survived by four sons: Russell, of Bloomington, Ind.; Mark, of Englewood, Colo.; Philip, of Olalla, Wash.; and William, of Durham, N.C.; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

For much of the first 25 years of their marriage, the couple and their children moved to accommodate Mr. Boulding’s academic travels.

Among other places, they lived in Nashville and in Ames, Iowa, where Ms. Boulding completed an M.A. at Iowa State, and spent many years in Ann Arbor, Mich. There, in the early 1960s, when peace studies — an interdisciplinary field that examines violent and nonviolent behavior in personal, political and historical contexts and the sources and resolution of conflict — was emerging as a legitimate program of inquiry, she helped found the scholarly organization the International Peace Research Association. She also pursued a doctorate at the University of Michigan and ran unsuccessfully for Congress as an opponent of the Vietnam War.

While she was working on her dissertation, the family moved to Boulder, Colo., and in 1968 Ms. Boulding became the leader of the Women’s International League of Peace and Freedom, the antiwar group whose first president was Jane Addams. At the University of Colorado at Boulder, she founded the program in peace studies, and later, after she moved to Dartmouth, she helped build the program there as well.

Ms. Boulding’s other books include “The Underside of History: A View of Women Through Time” (1975, revised 1992); “Women in the Twentieth Century World” (1977); and “Children’s Rights and the Wheel of Life” (1978).

She often said her path in life was determined by World War II. When she was a girl, she recalled, her mother had been homesick for Norway, and young Elise conceived of that country as a haven, a place to hold in reserve as a retreat, where she would always be safe. That vision was shattered in 1940 by the Nazi invasion of Norway.

“And that was when I realized that there was no safe place on earth,” she said. “And I knew that I had found my life’s mission.”

On Saturday, June 5, 2010, AFSC in partnership with the Japanese American National Museum, Nikkei for Civil Rights and Redress, and the UCLA Asian American Studies Center, will be hosting a special event to honor and commemorate the relationship between the Quakers and the Japanese American community. SCQM Retreats Committee announces a camping opportunity on May 22.

We have an opportunity to go camping (in cabins) at Sturtevant Camp in
the hills behind Sierra Madre (Arcadia) on Saturday May 22.

We still have spaces for around 10 people.

This is a jewel of a place to visit and had been closed for a number of
years due to a landslide. With the rains and spring flowers it should be
magnificent.

It will cost around $50 per person to go for food and lodging. We would
hike in on Saturday and back out again on Sunday the 23rd.

The hike is "about four (4) miles (if you don't hike to the base of the
Falls), with about a half mile of elevation ascent." There are photos of

Big Sunday is a huge annual festival of volunteering that takes place throughout Southern California, this year on May 1st and 2nd. Every year for Big Sunday Weekend we organize hundreds of projects to benefit lots of different organizations, parks, schools, and communities. We like to say that there is some way for everyone to help someone else, and we like our list of projects to reflect that.

Big Sunday has no political or religious affiliation but faith communities are encouraged to work together. Our mission is more than just community service - it's about community building through community service, and our goal is to see volunteers all around Southern California helping alongside all different kinds of people. There has been a lot of fantastic energy in the Santa Barbara area this year for Big Sunday. We have met with several very enthusiastic student groups at UCSB, and have been speaking with a number of other community leaders about bringing their volunteers out on Big Sunday Weekend. This is great, but we need more projects for this throng of volunteers to participate in! If you know of a great nonprofit organization or school or park or shelter that could benefit from Big Sunday Weekend, we would love to help them submit an application for a project, but time is running out! To Members of the AFSC Community,

I regret to have to report to you the death of Robert W. (Bob) Gray. He was almost 92 years old.

Bob first became involved with AFSC as a volunteer in the Civilian Public Service Camps operated by AFSC for conscientious objectors during World War II. As a CPSer Bob worked for the U.S. Forest Service, the Soil Conservation Service and the U.S. Office of Scientific Research and Development.

At the end of the War Bob joined the AFSC staff. He bailed clothes to be used in our overseas relief effort, he was Director of the Work and Study Program, Director of our Relief and Rehabilitation Project in South Korea, Director of our Relief and Development Project in Orissa, India, Associate Executive Secretary of the Pacific Southwest Regional Office, Executive Secretary of the Pacific Southwest Regional Office, and Associate Executive Secretary at the central office here in Philadelphia.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys Corkrum Gray, and by three daughters, Roberta, Janet and Marie. Gladys and Bob have eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Gladys and their daughters came with Bob, of course, when he served in Korea and India.

Bob was a mentor to me when I first joined AFSC, and later Bob, Gladys and I traveled together visiting sites of AFSC work on the continent of Africa. We have been good friends for many years.

Bob was active in many Friends organizations besides the AFSC, including California Yearly Meeting, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, Friends World Committee for Consultation, Pendle Hill, Medford Leas and the Elizabeth Haddon Housing Corporation.

I will let local people know about a Memorial Meeting once one is scheduled.
